Chapter22- Tom and Huck go after Red Joe's treasure

Tom could not sleep that night. He could not sleep at all. After breakfast, he went to look for

Huck. "Huck," Tom said, "we must find out where Red Joe is. We must get that treasure." "Yes,

I've been thinking about it. Number Two is the place. But where's Number Two?" "I don't

know...... Perhaps it's the number of a house......" "But houses haven't any numbers here."

"That's ture......Do you think it's the number of a room." "We can easily find out. There are only

two inns in the village." "Let's go and look now. I'll go." "No, Huck! You wait here for me. I'll go. I

shan't be long." After aboult half an hour, Tom came back. " Red Joe isn't in Number Two at

Hopkins' Inn," he said. There's a young clerk staying there. He's been staying there for the last

three years. He's a nive fellow. I know him. I tjink Red Joe is at Miller's place. Fred Miller says

that Number Tow there is a very strange room. Nobody goes in and nobody comes out. But

somebody's there. Somebody who likes to drink. Fred has heard somebody singing, somebody

drunk......"

For several nights after this, Tom did not sleep well. He was waiting for Huck's "me-ow". But

Huck did not call him. Then Becky Thatcher came back from her holiday in the city. Tom and

Becky played happily together. Tom almost forgot about Red Joe and his treasure

Then came the day of Becky's picnic. All her friends were invited. They all met together at

Becky's house. "Becky," said Mrs Thatcher, "you'll be very tried when you come back tonight.

Stay with Susan Harper for the night. Come home in the morning. You won't be so tried then.

While they were walking to the boat, Tom said to Becky, "Don't stay at Susan Harper's. Stay at

Widow Douglas's.You know how nice she is. And she makes such nice cakes. I'll stay there too.

Then we can go home together in the morning."

Chapter 21

Red Joe And His Treasure

The sun set and the boys were still waiting. It was fast growing dark. would Red Joe wake up

before morning?Would the boys have to stay there al l night?

About an hour after sunset, Red Joe woke up. he looked round him. He saw his companion

asle2ep. He kicked him hard. "We must get out of here at once." "we must hide the money

before we go. We can't carry it about with us."

The boys clearly heard the words 'money" and "hide". Their eyes began to shine. They forgot to

feel afraid!Treasure! "I told you!"Tom whispered to Huck. "We've through the cracks in the

flooe.
